Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)
This is one of our favorite food plants for birds. It is native to the US, but was worshiped by the Incans. Native Americans made flour and oil from the seeds, and cloth from the plant fibers. Finches, in particular, are attracted to it.

Planting requirements: full sun; can tolerate most any type soil. Sow 1/4" to 1/8" deep. The size of the bloom is dictated by the amount of water and the richness of the soil.
